May 18 Democracy Square

Stretching from the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Government Office to the Geumnam-ro area, this famous plaza is the landmark where the May 18 Democratic Uprising took place. In May 1980, the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government office building was the headquarters of the civil resistance movement and the scene of rallies. The plaza has been officially known as the May 18 Democracy Square since 1996.
May 18 Archives

May 18 Archives was established in 2015 to collect and preserve the historical records on the May 18 Democratic Uprising. It has permanent exhibition rooms to show what happened in Gwangju for 10days from May 18th to 27th in 1980. The records of May 18 were listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2011.
Jeonil 245 Building

It is another historical site of May 18 Democratic Uprising with the proof of helicopter strafing. In the memorial hall, 245 bullet marks are still preserved. In the rooftop garden, visitors can enjoy a view of the city with Mt. Mudeungsan.
May 18 National Cemetery

As this new cemetery was opened in May 1997, bodies from the old cemetery were exhumed and re-interred in the new location. An annual commemoration is held each May and it is common for people to visit the cemetery to honor the dead.
The cemetery holds the graves of 986 victims of the May 18th Democratic Uprising, seven structures, and many monuments.
